Overt discrimination is against the law, and yet wage disparities persist. The paper will consider factors that drive salary such as region of the country, healthcare costs, union membership, experience, education, personal characteristics and authority. Role congruity, ethical issues, and defining cultural characteristics contribute to the wage gap. The paper looks at holistic solutions to improve human capital: make better education available, encourage entrepreneurship, mitigate work/family conflict through flexible scheduling, and address gender diversity on boards of directors. Additionally, the push to make wages transparent to permit workers themselves to recognize the disparity and confront the issues is discussed.
