- W2796632612 abstract "The demand for goat meat is increasing but its supply remains inadequate. This prompted R & D workers to embark on upgrading of native stocks to improve growth performance. The infusion of Boer line, a meat-type breed, to upgrade Anglo-Nubian may result in higher genetic potential for meat. Thus, from March 2005 to February 2006, Cruz et al. (CLSU) evaluated the growth performance of three-way cross or triple cross goats along with other breeds under CLSU and off-campus (backyard) conditions. A total of 155 does and five bucks were used in the CLSU study, while 68 does and three bucks were used under backyard conditions. Under CLSU condition, the animals were kept under pure confinement, while it was semi-confinement under backyard condition during the entire duration of the study. All the animals were fed ad libitum with available feed resources. Supplementation with concentrates and legumes such as Leucaena, Gliricidia, Sesbania, and other locally available legumes was also done. Recommended health management practices were applied. Findings of the study revealed the following: mean birth weights of Boer, Anglo-Nubian, and three-way cross goats under CLSU condition ranged from 3.0 kg to 3.4 kg, while those under off-campus (backyard) condition ranged from 2.63 kg to 3.08kg. Three-way crosses had weight gains of 19.40kg and 17.55kg from birth to weaning under CLSU and off-campus conditions, respectively. These figures were higher than those of upgraded Anglo-Nubian goats raised in both conditions. Average daily gain (ADG) of three-way crosses raised under CLSU and off-campus conditions was 80.83g and 73.13g, respectively, while that of upgraded Anglo-Nubian goats was 74.18g and 71.7g, respectively. Initial results of the project showed the potential of three-way cross or triple cross goats in terms of high growth rate. Further study has to be conducted to determine its potential value as slaughter/ market animals." @default.
