- W279863003 abstract "I have been involved in ecumenical endeavors during my whole adult life, and it is out of this experience that I accepted the assignment given me to discuss this topic. In the first part of this essay, I will rearticulate my long held position that ethics does not and, indeed, cannot be a means for achieving and realizing Christian unity. Nevertheless, I support, work for, and do not question that the goal of ecumenism is precisely to work toward that unity. second part of my essay will hold that, in spite of this pessimistic appraisal, there is something critical that Orthodox Christian ethics can offer Christian ecumenism today and in the future. I conclude by highlighting my main response to the topic of what Orthodox Christian ethics can offer ecumenism. (1) 1. Why Ethics Cannot Be the Means for Christian Unity Thirty years ago I responded to an invitation to discuss this very issue by J. Robert Wright for a book directed to a primarily Anglican audience. I remember the pained look on his face when he realized that I was not going to support the view that ethics and not theology was the way forward in ecumenical dialogue. (2) three decades that followed, I believe, have vindicated my position. basic reasons for this stance are two. first and most inclusive from an Orthodox Christian perspective is the unchanging commitment to the primacy of what used to be called the Faith and Order dimension of ecumenical activity. approach put theological coherence as the foundation of ecclesial unity. After its high point in the Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry documents, this approach has dwindled into insignificance in contemporary ecumenical activity and drive in the World Council of Churches. Thomas FitzGerald, a former W.C.C. unit head and presently Dean of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, has articulated the clear and unequivocal stance of Orthodox Christian ecumenical thought in a comprehensive article titled Divergent Trends in the World Council of Churches: Major Orthodox Concerns. While affirming the practice of the local Orthodox Churches to be involved in many different aspects of the ecumenical movement, FitzGerald reminded his readers of the goal of that participation by quoting a memorandum from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which clearly delineates the motivation and goal of the Orthodox Churches for ecumenical activity. It reads in part: Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the Orthodox Church in general, consider that the technical term 'ecumenical movement' which is used for more [than] seventy years in Christian circles, should not lose its original meaning.... we believe ... this technical term 'ecumenical movement' should express the effort which aims at Christian unity only. (3) One of the most prominent theologians of the Orthodox Church in dialogues, conferences, and assemblies is Metropolitan John Zizioulas of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, who wrote, The Orthodox participate in the ecumenical movement out of their conviction that the unity of the Church is an inescapable imperative for all Christians. He continued, This (visible) unity cannot be restored or fulfilled except through the coming together of those who share the same faith in the Triune God and are baptized in His name. (4) In a statement issued by the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Romania in 1997 this stance was made crystal clear: The restoration of the visible unity of the Church is an issue which aims mainly at the unity in faith.... is why the unity of faith must overcome the present confessional pluralism based on doctrinal diversity. (5) While a widely held view in the movement, all this changed with the ascent of Konrad Raiser in 1992, as General Secretary of the W.C.C., who served in this capacity until 2004. During his tenure, reflecting radically new ways of interpreting scripture from the ground up became not only dominant in ecumenical discourse but an almost exclusive element of the thought and goals of ecumenical theory and praxis. …" @default.
