- W2799142016 abstract "While globally the number of newly HIV-positive people continues to fall, this is not the case for men who have sex with men (MSM) (Beyrer et al. 2012; UNAIDS 2012), who continue to be severely affected. HIV prevalence estimates amongMSM range from 3% in the Middle East to over 30 % in the Caribbean (UNAIDS Caribbean Regional Support Team 2010). In nearly every country for which information is available, the odds of contracting HIVare higher among MSM than among men in general, sometimes by more than 30 times. This is the case even in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa – a region that was long believed to have an exclusively heterosexual epidemic. Studies suggest that HIV prevalence continues to rise amongMSM for specific subgroups or in some geographical areas. In the USA, for instance, it is estimated that new HIV infections in this population have increased by 8 % per year since 2001. This dire situation can be understood as a consequence of a variety of factors, including the high HIV transmission rate per sex act for anal intercourse – estimated to be about 18 times higher than for vaginal intercourse. In addition, the global response to the epidemic among MSM thus far has been insufficient, largely as a result of antigay stigma and, in some countries, the criminalization of homosexuality." @default.
