- W2799674462 abstract "Background: A considerable amount of literatureattests to the benefits associated with regular exerciseon physiological well being (Berlin & Colditz, 1990:Am J Epidemiol 32, 62–628). However despite thismany people do not partake in the minimumrecommended amount of exercise (30 minutes perday a minimum of five times per week) (ACSM,2007: Guidelines for exercise testing and prescription). There is now recognition within exercisepsychology literature of immediate improvementsin mood state following aerobic exercise, which maybode well for attracting the sedentary population.Despite this there is scant research investigating theeffects of perceived exertion on the mood changesassociated with exercise.Purpose: This study was designed to examine theeffect of rating of perceived exertion (RPE) on therelationship between exercise and mood, in a naturalexercise setting.Method: Thirty participants consisting of 24males and 6 females completed a one mile run, thepositive and negative affect scale (PANAS) wasadministered before and after exercise to give preand post scores for both positive and negative mood.Rating of perceived exertion was also reported afterexercise using Borg’s perceived exertion scale andparticipants were separated into high, medium andS70 AbstractsDownloaded by [University of Central Lancashire] at 15:03 02 January 2012low groups based on their (RPE) score. 263(Time6RPE group) mixed analysis of variance, with repeated measures on the first factor, examinedthe effects of exercise on positive mood subject to(RPE) group. Results: Overall participants reported significantimprovements in both positive and negative moodstate in response to exercise; the high (RPE) groupdemonstrated the greatest improvements in positivemood whereas the moderate (RPE) group demonstratedthe greatest improvements in negative mood.Discussion: This study demonstrates that anacute bout of aerobic exercise can facilitate improvementsin both positive and negative mood. Thefindings have implications for the prescription ofexercise designed to maximize mood improvementand thus capitalize on the improvement to subsequentlyimprove exercise participation and adherence.Exercise programs may wish to encourageparticipants to work at a moderate to high level ofexertion. Conclusion: The results also have implicationsfor clinical psychologists giving more support forexercise as an effective treatment for depression.Future research should focus on establishing acorrelation between people who experience improvedmood in response to exercise and subsequentexercise adherence." @default.
