- W2800144661 abstract "This chapter focuses on Sunni–Shi‘i dialectics primarily occurring during the 10th through 13th centuries on the critical topic of legitimate leadership, while showing their connections with earlier discourses on this topic as well as their continuation into the following period. From this larger historical context, it establishes that compared to more fluid conceptions of leadership on the part of the proto-Shi‘a in the 7th century, the fault lines between the Sunnis and the Shi‘a only deepened from the following century onward and became further entrenched during the period under discussion here. The chapter explores the historical reasons for such doctrinal developments, especially in the post-Occultation period (after 940) when the Twelfth Imam, the rightful religiopolitical leader of the community according to the largest Shi‘i denomination (the Twelver Shi‘a), is understood to have physically disappeared from earth, his return being understood as marking the end of times. Ultimately, although the Shi‘a and the Sunnis shared common ground in their reverence for the family of the Prophet, they parted ways on the question of whether to attach soteriological significance to professing allegiance to the ahl al-bayt, the family of the Prophet. The Sunnis would deny it while the Shi‘a made such an allegiance a mandatory part of seeking salvation in the next world: a doctrinal distinction that continues to color and temper Sunni–Shi‘i relations to this day." @default.
