- W2800187122 abstract "The metabolic pathway in plants consists of two main types; the primary pathway occurs in all the cells and is involved in manipulating group of basic compounds, while the secondary pathways occur in specialized cells and provide a wide range of unique compounds. The primary pathway includes metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and proteins and proceeds through many-step reactions of glycolysis; the tricarboxylic acid cycle; the pentose phosphate shunt; and lipid, protein, and nucleic acid biosynthesis. In comparison, secondary metabolites like terpenes, alkaloids, phenylpropanoids, lignin, flavonoids, and coumarins are the important molecules of defense for plants and are produced by the malonic and mevalonic acid pathways, shikimic and methylerythritol phosphate pathway. Phytochemicals or bionutrients isolated from the medicinal plants have been found very effective in preventing various chronic diseases like cancer, heart diseases, and diabetes to name a few. Thus, these phytochemicals have important disease-preventing function because of the antioxidants, detoxifying agents, anticancer agents, neuropharmacological agents, and immunity-potentiating agents. The phytochemicals isolated from single plants have more than one function. However, a lot of research is to be done on isolation of these phytochemicals from Indian medicinal plants and assessing their potential in protecting against different type of diseases. In this chapter, we will be discussing about the synthesis and metabolism of phenolic compounds. Ayurveda, in India, is practiced from the ancient times and has a strong basis of traditional herbal medicine. Herbal medicines have the ancient history and are used for the treatment of various ailments. Thus, plants being the rich source of phytochemicals serve as a potential source for the development of new herbal drugs. Also, these herbal drugs have been considered as promising future drugs, and lot of research is to be done for the rediscovery of medicinal plants as a source of potential drugs." @default.
