- W2800274489 abstract "Reviewed by: Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe by Preston Norton Wesley Jacques Norton, Preston Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe. Hyperion, 2018 [400p] ISBN 978-1-4847-9062-5 $17.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 8-12 At 6' 6, 250 pounds, hulking Clifford Hubbard is known at the living hell that is Happy Valley High as Neanderthal. At home, his violent dad is even worse, and only Cliff 's brother Shane and his and Cliff 's shared love of movies, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Bruce Almighty and everything in between, offered reprieve-until Shane's suicide. When the star QB Aaron Zimmerman wakes up from a threeday coma and immediately calls upon Cliff to help with an improbable mission from God, Cliff, who has little else in his life, acquiesces. Aaron has a list of five tasks-including confronting a bully, reminding a teacher why he became a teacher, and stopping a hacker-that he believes God prescribed to him to make his rural Montana community a better place. The novel's realism shines in how spectacularly the boys fail at first, seemingly making things much worse, while developing a bond they both desperately need. Cliff, as a capable narrator and unabashed teenage boy, is intelligent and vulgar in equal measure in this story about belief both transcendental and intimate. That this whole series of events-the boys' friendship, the meaning [End Page 396] behind the list-may be spurred not by God but by Aaron's boat-related brain trauma is a concern the novel addresses directly, and while the boys' conviction is shaken it eventually spreads to their whole school. With a number of references any cinephile would appreciate, the cleverly plotted novel attests that discovering meaning anywhere or with anyone is invaluable.
