- W2800319989 abstract "Asthma poses a serious public health challenge around the world. The use of natural therapeutic interventions may have the potential to enhance conventional medication and improve treatment outcomes. All patients (with Asthma and/or COPD and/or Rhinitis Allergica) who were referred by a pulmonary care provider to the Mátra Medical Institute for health reasons were invited to participate in a 3-week complex therapy intervention. In addition to scheduled medical examinations and treatments, 678 patients (average age: 61.3, sd = 8.9) who agreed to take part in the study were asked to participate in breathing exercises conducted on the resort terraces outdoors, twice a day and attend rehabilitative physical exercises led by a physiotherapist once a day. All 678 patients completed the programme. The average FEV1 values of the patients upon arrival at the resort was 71.0 (sd = 24.1), and as a result of the therapy, by the end of the 3rd week, the corresponding value was found to be 77.7 (sd = 22.6), which reflected a significant improvement (p < 0.05). Upon arrival at the institution, the average FEV1/VC value was 87.63 (sd = 18.7), which in 3 weeks improved to 91.25 (sd = 15.6) (p < 0.05). The result of the 6-min walk test taken upon arrival was 367.5 m (sd = 115.8), whereas after the 3rd week, performance had improved to 453.44 m (sd = 107.5) (p < 0.05). The results of the questionnaire-based examination method permitted an assessment of changes in the post-treatment medicinal demands and exercise capacities of the patients. In the 1st month and 6th month after treatment, 94.1% and 86% of the patients, respectively, were not using steroid-containing medication to facilitate their breathing. These results suggest that climatic effects present even at lower altitudes (700 m) are beneficial for the treatment of patients suffering from asthma and COPD." @default.
