- W2800545706 abstract "The musical is the popular musical play, occurred in Britain and U.S. in the late 19th century, and musical costume is the dress by actors, in order to deliver elements which cannot be conveyed to audiences with dialogue, song, and behavior, for character in the work. Because musical is mixed by various kinds of art genres and not art to accept only with one sensory organ, it is becoming important of interpretation for signifying which each element is comprised at various levels, by fulfilling multi-dimensional cultural desire of modern men. Hereupon, we have selected musical drama 〈Dracula〉, based on literature, and studied the semiotic meaning in musical costume, by reflecting semiotic view of Roland Barthes into costume of musical 〈Dracula〉, focused on four musicals for analysis target, in this study. The result of semiotic meaning of costume in musical 〈Dracula〉 is as follows; First, for red and black costume of Dracula, it has expressed demonism and humanism of Dracula, and showed superiority, vertical and authoritative character of Dracula with size and volume of costume. Second, as of costume of Jonathan Harker, it has expressed regular character of his own as intellectual with suit, and represented his job to have trust, via low luminous coats. Third, concerning costume of Mina Murray, it had calm and cool character through color of low brightness and saturation. We can find that she has feminine character, but tried to express active figure of new female, rather than traditional image for women, by one piece of small bustle-type. Fourth, when it comes to Lucy Westernra, it expressed bright and innocent personality, by choosing costume of bright and clean color, and indicated wealth of Lucy Westernra, by wearing bulky bustle of decoration and clothes. Fifth, in regard of suit costume of Abraham Van Helsing, it denotes personality of position, dignity, and reputation, as well as intellect. Also, it is said to show his will and strongness to punish Dracula, for arrangement decoration of low light color and leather. Musical costume can be said as important element to support visual aspect and symbolic function, by playing the most direct role to shape actor visually. Based on this result of study, it is expected that study on musical costume will be progressed in various ways as well as semiotic aspect." @default.
