- W280092777 abstract "In a review of affective education programs for classroom use, Strein (1988) noted, ... the very essence of affective education programs, as contrasted to various forms of counseling, is that such programs can be successfully used by a classroom teacher as part of the curriculum (p. 288). Indeed, most affective education programs have been designed primarily for teachers to use in classroom settings: the Human Development Program (Bessell & Palomares, 1970), Toward Effective Development (Dupont, Gardner, & Brody, 1974), Dimensions of Personality (Limbacher, 1973), Developing Understanding of Self and Others (DUSO) (Dinkmeyer, 1970), and Developing Understanding of Self and Others-Revised (DUSO-R) (Dinkmeyer & Dinkmeyer, 1982). Regardless of how well such programs are conceptualized and packaged, however, considerable knowledge is required about child development, group interactions, and skills for helping children to express feelings and explore emotions, attitudes, and behaviors. Thus, school counselors (and school psychologists) frequently become a resource for teachers by offering ongoing classroom guidance or by using affective education programs with children individually or in small groups apart from the classroom. Counselors can affirm that it is not easy to use these programs effectively and may want to consider modifications that improve their efficacy. The current study examines one such modification: the use of a children's intake interview in which children developed personal goals prior to their participation in a DUSO-R program. Why should counselors conduct an intake interview for children? Childers (1987) described the importance of goal setting in focusing the client's [child's] attention and action, setting the direction for the therapeutic relationship, and increasing productivity for the client [child]. The authors suggest that such an interview could orient children to the DUSO-R program, engage them in the process, and help them accomplish personal goals. In addition, the intake information might allow counselors to gain" @default.
