- W2800994676 abstract "Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is afflicting mankind in an unprecedented manner. Among the ailments of MetS, obesity and diabetes have assumed epidemic proportions. Fueled by processed foods, sedentary lifestyle, pollution, chemical and drug abuse, these health conditions have emerged as major morbidity and mortality factor. Obesity, the excessive adipose tissue deposition, and diabetes, the chronic disease of glucose and ionic imbalance are the precursors of fatal diseases like cancer, neuropathies, cardiovascular complications, reproductive issues, autoimmune, degenerative, and a gamut of other inflammations. As the conventional drugs are riddled with side effects, managing these conditions by diet appears to be the correct approach. Over the years of functional food research, several candidates with efficacy in obesity and diabetes alleviation have been identified. Such food ingredients, rich in dietary fibers hold prospect to counter MetS symptoms by restoring physiological pH of the body and resolving inflammations, the root cause of all pathologies. The dietary fibers from novel and underutilized sources might be exploited to tackle MetS symptoms. This reference article outlines the current status and future scopes of dietary fiber-fortified food, citing the examples of Western diet, paleo diet, fermented food, and Mediterranean food. The underlying mechanisms in the perceived benefits of diary fibers have been discussed. As the final note, and in pragmatic vein, it has been mentioned why dietary fibers might not be sufficient to alleviating obesity, diabetes, and associated co-morbidities as long as other stressor and inflammation sources are not addressed." @default.
