- W2801456665 abstract "The circumstances and details of Muhammad's life remain the subject of controversy among historians. While much information stems only from 8th- and 9th-century sources, the Qur'an and the so-called Constitution of Medina are more commonly accepted as contemporaneous documents which offer an impression of the nature of Muhammad's movement, leadership, and career. His prophecy and monotheism conform to late antique patterns, although his political ambitions set him apart from other holy men. The expansion of his Medinan community into larger areas of West Central Arabia sparked the Arab-Muslim conquests and the rise of a new empire. These early sources as well as later texts suggest that Muhammad's movement was initially inclusive and appealed to Christians and Jews, affirming but correcting their scriptural traditions, while becoming more exclusive in the course of a number of conflicts. After Muhammad's death, fundamental questions of political and religious authority in the community were negotiated, at times, violently. Principles determining political leadership concerned the significance of kinship and piety, but also the presence and nature of religious guidance after the death of the prophet." @default.
