- W2801742016 abstract "This article examines the impact of the population policies of Iran on the core values attached to reproduction and kinship, following the demographic transformations of the past three decades. It uses the lens of infertility to explore the extent to which the norms and practices attached to family, marriage, kinship, and reproduction have been affected by the changes in the size and structure of the population and the family. The analysis suggests that the preference shown by infertile couples for using their siblings’ and other relatives’ gamete to conceive, is the result of a careful [re] assessment, by infertile individuals and their network of kin, of what kinship means, and confirms the paramount importance of biological relatedness as the only acceptable form of reproduction in Iranian culture. The findings also point out that, in cases where infertile couples have conceived through gamete donation by relatives, a new form of ‘consanguinity’ has emerged, which, potentially, could profoundly affect the existing structure of kinship. The article concludes that, in spite of the ebbs and flows of the state’s approach to population policies and the seemingly major changes in reproductive behaviour of the generation of reproductive age, opting for either one child or voluntary childlessness, the core cultural values attached to reproduction have remained unchanged, even though they may appear under a different guise." @default.
