- W2801897726 abstract "Despite the quietist position normally associated with Sufis, many among them have historically been and currently are highly active in politics and social reform. This is true in both Muslim majority regions and the Muslim diaspora, as Sufis have enjoyed pervasive social influence, taking on activist roles as well as having been instrumentalized by state elites. As the processes of globalization unfold, the question of the compatibility of Sufism with modernity can in part be traced to the hopes of Western governments that Sufism can be used as a counterforce against Islamist groups. Many Sufis, however, have more in common with Islamists than is generally acknowledged. In addition to activism in politics and social reform as well as structural similarities, the call for a return to the idealized life of the Prophet and his companions, such as epitomized in the concept of tariqa Muhammadiyya (“the Muhammadan path”), has a striking resemblance to Islamist ideas." @default.
