- W2801926859 abstract "Drug addiction is a chronically relapsing disease that results in over 14 million deaths a year. This cost is only matched by the financial burden that drug addiction drains from society. In general, cognitive therapy for addiction is limited and pharmacotherapeutics for addiction are ineffective or addictive. Given the lack of treatment and desperate state of some drug abusers, deep brain stimulation (DBS), a United States Food and Drug Administration approved treatment for a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders, is being considered as an option for treatment. Studies of DBS have indicated the complex actions of DBS, and have provided a framework for using DBS as a therapy to treat refractory addiction. This chapter briefly reviews the history of DBS neural substrates that have been targeted for preclinical and/or clinical DBS research in drug and alcohol abuse. Overall, DBS could be a useful tool to treat addiction but further research is warranted." @default.
