- W2802292022 abstract "Previous studies have established the validity of the diagnostic code for hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) in adults. In this study, we aimed to assess the validity of the HS diagnostic code in a pediatric population. We reviewed the medical records of 136 pediatric patients seen at a single academic center who received an International Classification of Diseases code of 705.83 or L73.2 between January 2012 and September 2017. We collected demographic and clinical characteristics, including major and minor HS diagnostic criteria based on the consensus definition from the 2nd International Research Symposium on Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Of the screened patients, 103 were < 19 years old and diagnosed with HS. All major HS diagnostic criteria were met by 53 (51.5%) patients overall, 13 (27.7%, n=47) patients with 1 ICD code, and 40 (71.4%, n=56) patients with 2+ ICD codes. Of those who did not meet all major criteria, 41/50 (82%) failed to meet the disease recurrence criterion either due to single disease episode or recurrence outside of proposed 6-month timeframe. Patients ever diagnosed by a dermatologist were more likely than those never diagnosed by a dermatologist to meet all major diagnostic criteria (46 (59.7%) vs 7(26.9%)). Family history of HS was collected in 74 cases (71.8%) and bacterial culture was performed in 11 cases (10.6%). Mean age at presentation was 14.8 years (SD 2.5 years, n=103), mean body mass index was 30.3 (SD 8, n=84), and 79 (76.7%) were female. Black (24%3) and white (22.3%) race, and Hispanic (61.2%) ethnicity made up the majority of the cohort. Our study showed that almost half of pediatric patients diagnosed with HS did not meet diagnostic criteria, suggesting that HS diagnostic criteria may benefit from reconsideration for a pediatric population. Having 2+ HS ICD code and ever being diagnosed by a dermatologist increased the likelihood of meeting diagnostic criteria." @default.
