- W2802474826 abstract "Abstract The aging of brains is an inexorable process marked by a decrease in the overall cognitive performance of individuals and an increased likelihood of neurodegenerative diseases. Whole genome analyses suggest that this process is associated with changes in gene expression that may be of great significance to understand aging phenotypes. However, these analyses average gene expression levels of complex and heterogeneous cell populations subjected to unknown rates of cell death. Thus, it is not clear whether the variation of these averages reflects changes in transcriptional regulation, cell death, or a combination of both variables. Invertebrate models with their small brains, and in particular Drosophila with its arsenal of tools, offer unique advantages to analyze whole brains with single cell resolution to better understand the progression of aging and its phenotypes. Here we discuss the transformative potential of single cell resolution methods to investigate aging of brains and the challenges of this approach." @default.
