- W2802607777 abstract "Abstract High frequency/ultrasonic communication, defined as communication via vocalizations above 10 kHz, is a rare phenomenon among primates. The nocturnal Malagasy mouse and dwarf lemurs represent an interesting exception. Most, but not all, studied species use the high-frequency/ultrasonic frequency window for communication to cope with various social and ecological challenges in dispersed social networks. By manipulating defined stimuli and behavioral situations, vocalizations can be induced predictably, providing empirical evidence for vocally conveyed emotional states among conspecifics. Findings suggest that in this basal primate group, cross-taxa variation in high frequency/ultrasonic signaling is linked to predation. Thus, the sensory drive hypothesis postulating that environmental pressures drive the evolution of social signals specifically can be supported. Furthermore, findings indicate that the evolution of high frequency/ultrasonic vocal communication in this primate group represents a compromise between being cryptic for predators and noticeable for conspecifics." @default.
