- W2803358139 abstract "The concept of implicature was drawn firstly in 1957 by the philosopher Paul Grice. For the first time he introduced the cognate implicature as the technical terms denoting “the act of meaning or implying something by saying something else” (Davis, 1998:5). This research is concerned to the analysis of the conversational implicatures, becausethey are associated with the speakers and the hearers as the participants in communication. Frequently, people intend to imply their conveyed notions because of some reasons, and sometimes it makes their interlocutors puzzled. Thus, this research is contributed in order to make a clarity of what the implicatures are and why people imply their notion. The researcher proposes the film script entitled The Sixth Sense as the object of this research, yet, the main data are the whole conversations between Dr. Malcolm Crowe and Cole Sear. The utterances from Malcolm and Cole are considered having a lot of conversational implicatures. The ways they produce their implied notions with the particular possible motives are very unique, though not all conversations may contain the implicatures. Their conversations are segmented into fragments and analyzed based on the theories. The results are served in the forms of words, phrases, and utterances because this research uses the descriptive qualitative design. This research finds that there are two types of conversational implicatures which are used by the speakers, they are the generalized and the particularized types. In nineteen fragments which are listed as the main data, there are three fragments show the indication of the generalized type, while sixteen fragments are identified has the particularized type. It means that, almost all conversational implicatures in these fragments require a special knowledge to ‘unfold’ the possible notions. Meanwhile, the researcher finds that the politeness strategy as the major possible motives to ‘encode’ their notions. Keywords: conversational implicature, generalized, particularized." @default.
