- W2804117602 abstract "Abstract In nanomedicine, one common interest is how to detect and visualize environmental changes at the nano- or microscale in live cells. The target topic in this chapter is temperature as a fundamentally important parameter, since it can influence factors such as binding-unbinding kinetics, diffusion, enzymatic activity, and viscosity. However, the local temperature at the microscopic level still remains elusive. This chapter introduces thermometers that are designed for measurements in aqueous conditions, especially in cells, under optical microscopes. It starts by demonstrating why both basic and clinical studies require optical thermometry; it then introduces four indexes: sensitivity, robustness, adaptability to in vivo environments, and targeting ability. This set of indexes is a guideline to understand the characteristics of a large variety of optical thermometers currently available. Continued efforts to improve these indexes will be then discussed in the following sections. At the end of this chapter, recent approaches to convert the thermometers into multifunctional materials, ways to improve targeting ability, and future perspectives are discussed." @default.
