- W2804167298 abstract "When a disaster strikes, we, humans, tend to think that certain types of behavior frequently occur in postdisaster situations. Such behaviors range from panic among the general public to looting and other kinds of criminal acts in disaster-affected areas. Also, we are willing to donate food, clothing, and necessities, assuming that such relief materials will be more helpful to disaster victims than monetary donations. But, are these of our conceptions really appropriate? Do our “images” of what humans do in a disaster really reflect what we actually do or should do in a disaster? This chapter focuses on misconceptions and realities surrounding human behavior during a disaster, dealing with panic, criminal acts, and donating behavior in postdisaster situations. This chapter also discusses what gives rise to such misconceptions as well as actual and potential impacts of these misconceptions on disaster response and management." @default.
