- W2806187611 abstract "Primary Care Management of Community-Acquired Pneumonia Prevention of lower respiratory tract infections via vaccinationDavid RP GuayDavid RP GuayDavid Guay is Professor in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota (MN, USA). He is also a consultant in the Geriatrics Division at HealthPartners Inc., a local health-maintenance organization. His research is focused on infectious diseases in the frail elderly, especially the immune responses to influenza and pneumococcal vaccines and the means to augment such responses.Search for more papers by this authorPublished Online:18 Oct 2011https://doi.org/10.2217/ebo.11.53AboutSectionsView ArticleView Full TextPDF/EPUB ToolsAdd to favoritesDownload CitationsTrack Citations ShareShare onFacebookTwitterLinkedInReddit View chapterAbstract: The terms vaccine and vaccination are derived from the Latin term for cow, vacca. Vaccine was the term used by Edward Jenner to describe the material that he used (i.e., cowpox virus) to produce immunity to the related smallpox virus. Louis Pasteur coined the term ‘vaccination’ in the 19th Century to include the physical act of administering any vaccine or toxoid. Immunization is the more inclusive term, denoting the additional process of inducing immunity. Vaccine, in the modern sense, constitutes a suspension of live (usually attenuated) or inactivated microorganisms or fractions thereof. Vaccine antigens can range from highly defined to complex or incompletely defined. The US CDC and Prevention recommends 17 vaccinations to prevent specific diseases in infants, children, adolescents and adults. Although a small number of vaccines will have positive effects in preventing pneumonic illness (e.g., Haemophilus influenzae type b, pertussis, measles and varicella), two vaccines with major potential roles in preventing community-acquired pneumonia are the subject of this chapter: influenza and pneumococcal vaccines.
