- W2806205631 abstract "Aims & Objectives: There is currently lack of evidence and guidelines for the use of intravenous fluids in paediatric cardiac critical care. Moreover, there is currently no documentation on which fluid management strategies are commonly being used in pediatric intensive care units around the world. We conducted a survey to determine common practice for fluid management among pediatric cardiac intensivists. Methods A literature review was conducted to identify relevant domains. The survey was then pilot tested and validated. The final survey consisted of 17 questions about fluid management practices after pediatric cardiac surgery. Distribution was done by email, social media, WFPICCS website and WFPICCS newsletter using an electronic, survey distribution and collection system (Research Electronic Data Capture). Results 108 responses from 18 countries and 6 continents were received. The most common prescribed fluid for maintenance was NaCl 0.9% (42%), followed by hypotonic fluids (33%) and balanced crystalloids (14%). The majority of the respondents limit total fluid intake to 50% after cardiac surgery. A significant proportion of respondents (27%) use colloids as their first choice for resuscitation. Moreover, 64% of respondents switch to a second fluid for ongoing resuscitation, 76% of these choose a colloid. Albumin 5% is the most commonly used colloid (61%). Almost all respondents (96%) agreed there is a need for research on this topic.Table 1.: Responses to Survey Questions Regarding Maintenance FluidsFigure 1.: Types of Fluid Used Per IndicationConclusions Our survey demonstrates great variation in fluid management practices. These results highlight the need for research and evidence-based guidelines on this topic." @default.
