CD may involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus and symptoms at presentation vary depending on the location, behavior and severity of disease, as well as extraintestinal manifestations. Historical surveys have revealed descriptions of apparent cases of CD as far as back as Morgani in 1769. In 1813, Coombe reported the clinical history and autopsy finding of a young man with presumable obstructing CD. In 1828, Abercrombie described a similar case and Moore and Fenwick reported similar cases. A landmark paper was published in 1913 by Dalziel describing nine cases undergoing surgery for a ‘distal ileum’ inflammatory disease. In 1933, Crohn presented his paper with Oppenheimer and Ginzburg to the American Medical Association. They referred to a disease, which they called ‘terminal ileitis’. During the discussion, Bargen from the Mayo Clinic suggested the term ‘regional ileitis’. The classic paper was then first published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1932. The aim of the physician when managing a patient with probable CD is to establish the diagnosis and distribution of disease by appropriate methods and techniques, because this influences the choice of treatment and the short- and long-term patient outcome.
