- W2806684460 abstract "Chinese Literature and the Child: Children and Childhood in Late-TwentiethCentury Chinese Fiction, by Kate Foster. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013. viii + 251 pp. £50.00/US$ 169.95 (hardcover). This book is an ambitious study of images of children in Chinese literature from the 1980s and 1990s. Analyzing miscellaneous literary works, Kate Foster argues cogently that the image of the child plays a very important role in (transformations of adult identity in the late 20th century. It should be noted that the texts studied were written mainly for adults, not for children; this book is not about childrens literature, but rather about the child image in adult literature. Foster makes a close reading of 31 works by 23 writers from different backgrounds. With critical insights and original perspectives, she rereads well-known masterpieces while also diligently examining obscure works of equal literary value. Although primacy is given to literary texts and their internal logic, Foster also takes note of geohistorical shifts, and locates her analyses firmly in the larger sociohistorical, cultural, political and ideological contexts of the late 20th century. Further, she boldly deploys Western literary theories, and demonstrates that these Chinese texts have universal values that go beyond geopolitical boundaries. The book is well structured, and is in two parts. The first part sets the literary, cultural, political and sociohistorical context of the topic. Taking a comparative approach, Chapter 1 summarizes and examines the major themes in studies of the image of the child in China and the West, such as childhood innocence, the parent-child relationship and the use of child voice in literature. Adhering to chronological order, Chapter 2 surveys the evolution of the child image in both literature and sociohistorical reality from late imperial to contemporary China. The second and the main part of the book uses close reading to analyze miscellaneous literary narratives from the 1980s and 1990s. This part is divided by different, yet overlapping, themes, with each chapter devoted to one, such as the arrested infant whose fictional existence fails to go beyond early childhood, the corrupted and treacherous child whose origin and legitimacy are questionable, the abandoned and orphaned child and his or her social implications, and the child storyteller as a narrative device. While these literary themes are equally valuable, some are particularly significant and original, such as pregnancy and abortion. …" @default.
