- W2807651018 abstract "Aims & Objectives: IL-17-producing cells (γδT cells, lymphoid tissue inducing cells, NK and NKT, Th17), stimulated by IL-23, produce IL-17 and other factors responsible for maintaining mucosal integrity. We intended to evaluate the behavior of the IL-23/IL-17 axis in children with cancer and febrile neutropenia after chemotherapy Methods Blood samples were collected from patients (median age 5.8 years) on the first day of fever, and then on the second, third, fifth and fourteenth days. IL-12/23p40 and IL-17 were measured by cytometry. The temporal evolution was analyzed in mixed regression models with the occurrence of sepsis with fixed effect Results IL-12 / 23p40 presented higher estimated means for the non-occurrence of sepsis (263.3 pg/mL versus 93.5 for sepsis, P = 0.044). There was no significant temporal variation. For sepsis or non-sepsis, the estimated means of IL-17 were 2.22 pg / mL and 26.5 (P = 0.04), also without significant temporal variation. The correlation between IL-12 / 23p40 and IL-17 was linear, with R2 = 0.88 (P = 0.000) Conclusions Nonseptic patients had higher mean IL-12 / 23p40 and IL-17, suggesting integrity of the IL-23/Th17 axis, unlike septic patients. Five of the eight bacteria isolated from blood cultures in septic patients were intestinal bacteria. The low expression of IL-17 can be explained by the depletion and dysfunction of lymphocyte populations after chemotherapy. The high correlation between IL-12/23p40 and IL-17 shows that the measured effect was primarily due to the p40 fraction present in IL-23 (IL-17 inducer) but not in IL-12" @default.
