- W2807883933 abstract "Several years ago, I attended one of my daughter’s field hockey games—a small feat considering I had missed several of her games that season. Surgeons tend to miss these types of events and while my daughter understood the demands of my profession, it did not make missing her games any easier. When a medical marriage fails, missing softball games or dance recitals is often cited as one of the reasons why the union did not last. It’s not about missing that one big life event, but about missing all those little moments that can shape a child’s formation. But on this particular day, I was there, and seeing my daughter’s excitement and pride as she gazed at the sidelines and saw her busy surgeon dad watching her performance was truly satisfying. And yet, I found myself continuously looking down at my BlackBerry. I could not focus on the game because my phone alerted me to several new notifications. As I gazed down at my electronic device and viewed my “important” emails, I heard cheers and loud whistling. Determined to finish reading my email, I finally looked up only to make eye contact with my disappointed daughter. She had scored a goal and recognized that her father missed the moment. I was at the game, but I was not present. I might as well have been at the office. It has been said that email is a good servant but a terrible master. The data clearly agree with this notion—those who spend more time engaged in email are more prone to burnout, less happy, and more stressed [1, 4, 5, 8]. Productivity dwindles, and important matters are subordinated to the cascade of electronic demands [2]. Excessive cell phone usage in general has been linked to poor sleep quality [4], compromised mental health [5], decreased fitness [1], and diminished life satisfaction [8]. In an effort to stay connected with others, we lose sight of what our priorities are and the quality of the relationships that we have in the here and now diminishes. Although in 2018 it is all-but impossible to eliminate smartphone use entirely, surgeons, who are prone to burnout [10], should be mindful of their excessive cell phone usage. How can we curb our addiction to our smartphones? We have all heard of the potential benefits of a low-carb diet. In order to reclaim our lives, I suggest adopting a low-tech diet [3, 9]. Consider beginning this diet by not tackling email as the first order of business. Instead, write a list of what you wish to accomplish that day and attend to those matters first. Do not give away your power to the demands of others. Focus on what you wish to create and accomplish in the next precious 8 to 10 hours. One important study showed that answering email just three times a day led to decreased stress and increased wellbeing [7]. Just as we resist the temptation to snack continually, set two to three defined times for when you will address electronic correspondence. It may be noon and the end of the workday. Pick the times, and stick with them. And don’t even consider the dysfunctional practice of performing surgery while connected to a Bluetooth earpiece. Your patients need all of you and the quality of your surgery will necessarily be compromised with this purported attempt at multitasking. As I learned so painfully at that field hockey game, it is important to be fully present when with family. Meals are enjoyed when they are consumed mindfully; each bite savored and consumed deliberately. Your loved ones will notice your increased attention to their lives. Intimacy will grow, and you will be blessed with fulfilling relationships [6] Expect to go through some withdrawal pains when you decide to adopt a low-tech diet. You will probably find yourself reaching for your phone during your down time. But keep your eye on the prize—increased peace and wellbeing. As the old adage states: There is no growth in comfort, and no comfort in growth. Tomorrow, Try This Reign in your social-media presence. Consider deleting a social media app or two from your smartphone. The more time spent on your phone, the less likely you are engaged in pursuits that truly matter. Return to the somewhat antiquated phone call. Humans are social beings and hearing someone’s voice will do more to establish connection than ten emails. Commit to more-formal roles in your children’s lives. Offer to be a part-time coach, referee, or scorekeeper. The more involved you are, the more commitment you will demonstrate to your child. In addition, your new role will distract you from your electronic media fix. Schedule respites from electronic stimuli on a weekly basis. An 8-hour reprieve from one’s phone on a Saturday can serve as a mini vacation and restore one’s inner strength." @default.
