- W280803476 abstract "The temporal evolution of the directional action spectrum of free surface for deep water ocean waves is simulated by resolving the kinetic equation of Hasselmann (1962), which models non-linear third order and resonant wave-wave interactions. An accurate method for evaluating the non-linear transfer term has been developed on the basis of former work by Lavrenov (2001). It is here applied and validated on a test-case of the evolution of an initial spectrum without any external forcing nor damping. In this situation the (rapid) formation of a characteristic spectral shape is observed, and the evolution of the spectrum, characterized by a self-similar behaviour as predicted by the theory (Badulin et al., 2005), is well confirmed by the simulations. The influence of numerical parameters is investigated in order to check the robustness of the computational method. To conclude, perspectives on the use of advanced computational methods for the non-linear interactions in operational wave models are briefly discussed.
