They consist of a single rigid piece of porous material that possesses a unique bimodal pore structure distribution (macropores and mesopores). Unfortunately, the naked polymer monolith has irregular morphology and lack small mesopores, which also comes at the cost of surface area. The typical polymer-based monolithic materials consist of interconnected nonporous microglobules and their surface area do not exceed tens of m2 g−1 Although the large macropores provide advantages in the separations of large molecules such as proteins, they do not include the sufficient interaction sites for the separation of small molecules. However, several approaches have been proposed to enhance the monoliths” separation efficiency. Due to their amazing properties, nanomaterials could provide various advantages for the chromatographic techniques. The lack of mesopores, surface area, and sufficient interaction sites in the bare monolithic structure may be overcome through the combination with nanomaterials." @default.
