The primary goal of this study was to evaluate whether a tailored telephone-delivered motivational-interviewing–based intervention (MIBI) improves adherence to recommended OSA assessment in a community sample of Blacks at elevated risk for OSA. We utilized a community-based participatory research design (CBPR) to identify the health priority targeted as well as to design the study. Of the 1790 Black adults screened for OSA risk at salons, barber shops, community events and churches throughout Brooklyn, 365 were high-risk and agreed to participate in the RCT. Participants were randomized to one of 2 conditions; an educational control, which consisted of pamphlets with OSA information and a referral for a physician assessment for OSA, or telephone-delivered MIBI. Respondents who received the intervention were 7 times more likely to attend a sleep assessment for their OSA risk than those who did not receive the intervention. Within the intervention arm, participants who had better knowledge of OSA at baseline, greater education, were older, and had less total household income were more likely to attend the sleep assessment for OSA risk. There are high rates of sleep disturbance in the urban Black community. Tailored telephone-delivered MIBIs for behavioral health are effective in improving adherence to OSA diagnostic assessments, even with relatively minimal contact from the health educator." @default.
