- W2809209969 abstract "Request for Clarification: Gaspari et al. (3) submitted a letter that proposed a potential mechanism to explain the reduced lactate levels observed in our previously published research (4), in which participants were required to complete a resistance training protocol while wearing an elevation training mask (ETM). Furthermore, Gaspari et al. (3) speculated that the use of an ETM during exercise may serve as a strategy to increase lactate clearance because of enhanced respiratory muscle loading. Gaspari et al. (3) cite previous work (1,2) that indicated the rate of whole-body lactate clearance could be enhanced by breath loading, with subsequent improvements in exercise performance observed. This enhanced lactate clearance seems to be the result of increased respiratory muscle involvement and their respective higher oxidative capacity. This effect is likely attributable to a higher monocarboxylate transport protein content within the respiratory muscles themselves. We acknowledge that an enhanced rate of lactate clearance serves as a plausible explanation for the observed findings in our study (4). However, without having specifically measured ventilation, it is difficult to establish this conclusively as the primary mechanism. Similarly, our original explanation, which suggested alterations in muscle fiber involvement, is also difficult to identify as the primary mechanism because we did not measure electromyographic patterns of the involved musculature, which we identified as a limitation of the study. We thank Gaspari et al. (3) for their interest in our article and agree the theory of increased lactate clearance through increased respiratory muscle involvement may help explain the observed findings. This also is an indication that more research is clearly warranted to better identify the influence of ETMs or resistive breathing devices on training adaptations and pulmonary function." @default.
