- W2809228985 abstract "Objective: The present study aims at further understanding how environmental risk factors influence the course of Parkinson Disease (PD). More specifically, we evaluated if professional exposure to pesticides and heavy metals (welding) influenced the age of onset of the disease. Background: It is now widely recognized that genetic and environmental factors contribute to the risk of developing PD. However, the precise impact of these risk factors and their interaction has yet to be elucidated. More specifically, little is known about their influence on the clinical course of the disease, given that most epidemiological studies use a case-control cohort design and restrict their analysis to the relative risk of developing PD. Design/Methods: Data were obtained from a population-based, case-only, cohort of patients with a formal PD diagnosis (N = 248) recruited from a specialized movement disorders clinic in Eastern Canada. Results: The main results show that overall professional exposure to pesticides significantly reduces the age of onset of PD (55.1 y-o vs. 59.2 y-o; p = 0.003). Moreover, former welders also have a premature onset (54.3 y-o vs. 58.4 y-o; p = 0.03). Conclusions: This study highlights that environmental factors not only confer susceptibility to developing PD but may also play a role in how the disease manifests itself. Future steps, including merging the data from other PD cohorts for confirmation and subgroup analysis as well as genotype analysis, are planned in order to shed further light on these findings.
