Sorghum production in commercialsituations requires maximising grain yield on limited availablewater resources, which requires maximizing the ratio of yieldto evapotranspiration. In this study, a system analysis wasundertaken to identify those plant traits that might be alteredto improve sorghum yield in a moisture-limited environment.APSIM model was used to simulate sorghum (Sorghum bicolorL. moench) for 30-year period at two locations (Kano, Nigeriaand Bamako, Mali), characterized by high inter-annual rainfallvariability and evapotranspiration in the Sudano-Sahelianregion of West Africa. Since sorghum is known to be betteradapted to drier environments, a number of individual planttraits were adjusted in the calibrated APSIM sorghum-modulefor the two selected varieties. In the tested environments, itwas found that decreasing leaf size and increasing seed growthboth resulted in decreased yield while the ratio of grain yield toevapotranspiration was decreased. Combining sorghum planttraits in the model resulted in increased yield and the ratio ofgrain yield to evapotranspiration when the average for all theyears simulated. In addition, the simulated grain yield showdecline up to 25% in Bamako, Mali and 35% in Kano, Nigeriafor both varieties. These results indicate future adaptationsstrategy to climate variability and change for sorghums varietyis required while maintaining improving soil quality in acontinuing process." @default.
