- W2809826877 abstract "Breathing brings a steady supply of fresh air to the lungs, wheregas exchange takes place. In children older than newborns, theintercostal muscles also contract. This raises the ribs and stretches theparietal pleura even more. As the pleura stretches, the air pressure in thepleural cavity gets lower causes gas exchange easier.Lower respiratory tract infections are breathing disorders causeddue to the narrowing and inflammation of the airways in the lungs.Wheezing, Breathlessness, rapid breathing and cough are someprominent symptoms of lower respiratory tract infections. The breathingpatterns have to be manipulated with deep breathing and relaxationsessions. This will help the children to control respiratory muscles andimprove their conditions.Present study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness ofbreathing exercises as a play way method on respiratory parametersamong children with lower respiratory tract infections in selectedhospitals, Coimbatore. An Evaluative approach was used to assess the effectiveness ofbreathing exercises as play way method. The research design used wasquasi experimental non equivalent control group pre test post testdesign. The conceptual frame work for the study was based on modifiedPender’s health promotion model (revised 2002). The convenientsampling technique was used to select the samples, 30 samples for theexperimental group and 30 samples for the control group. Demographicvariables and pre test were conducted on the first day for bothexperimental and control group to assess the peak expiratory flow rateand forced expiratory volume by using micro life digital peak flowmeter. In experimental group the intervention of breathing exercises asplay way method was taught to the child and made them to do theexercises daily, 30 minutes for 5 consecutive days in the morning andevening. In control group the existing hospital routine was followed. Onthe 5th day post test was done in both experimental and control group. The data gathered were analysed using descriptive and inferentialstatistics. There is a significant difference in the paired ‘t’ test regardingrespiratory parameters among children with lower respiratory tractinfections such as peak flow rate (‘t’=8.54) and forced expiratoryvolume (‘t’=7.2) at p<0.05 level of significance. There is significantdifference in independent ‘t’ test regarding respiratory parameters suchas peak expiratory flow rate (t=7.82) and forced expiratory volume(t=4.49) at p<0.05 level of significance between experimental andcontrol group. There was a significant association found between peakflow rates in relation to frequency of attacks in the last year (χ2 =11.71)at (P < 0.05) level of significance. No significant association was foundbetween peak flow rates with their selected demographic variables inexperimental group. There was no significant association found betweenforced expiratory volumes with the selected demographic variables inexperimental group. The study findings revealed that there was significantimprovement in respiratory parameters in experimental group. Hencebreathing exercises as play way method were beneficial among childrenwith lower respiratory tract infections." @default.
