However, the low concentration of airborne hazardous entities requires the concentration of the analyte at the biosensor of choice. Here, we present a robust implementation of an effective “Airborne Analyte Transporter”, which (i) permits time-course sampling of airborne particles, (ii) precise localization and concentration of airborne particles at a designated location of a given biosensor (iii) and allows the biological downstream analysis of viable pathogens. The Airborne Analyte Transporter implements a corona discharge based analyte charging method in combination with an electrodynamic funnel concentration concept. The Airborne Analyte Transporter achieves a 1000-fold increase in particle concentration compared to diffusion and settling based transport and allows the precise and local collection of viable pollen, yeasts, spores, bacteria and virus particles with an additional lateral concentration. Potential biological hazards with concentrations down to 20 ppm can still be analyzed using different microscopy techniques and bacterial cultures.
