- W2810082245 abstract "The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) conducts single technology appraisals (STAs) on the clinical and economic impact of new health technologies to inform public reimbursement decision-making. However, the scope of technologies that are subject to an STA has expanded over time alongside the complexity of interventions. This research aims to evaluate the NICE STA workload in terms of number of STAs, appraisal consultation documents (ACDs), and final appraisal determination (FAD) page numbers. Publically available NICE STAs were screened, and key data extracted (01/01/2006-12/31/2016). Statistical tests were conducted using a Poisson regression. NICE conducted 235 STAs (excluding 25 non-submissions) at an average of 21.4 per annum (p.a.) (range: 4-52), significantly increasing over time by an average of 19% p.a. (95% CI: 13-26; p<0.001). The average number of ACDs associated with each STA is 1.13 (range: 1–3), but this did not show any statistical variation over time (p=0.559). The average FAD comprised 40.3 pages (range: 20–103). Annual average pages showed no statistically significant change over time (range: 24.7-53.9; p=0.351). The cumulative printed weight of all FADs per year was 643.6 kg (equating to 7.14 baby elephants). Annual weights also significantly increased over time by 25% p.a. (range: 5.9-134.2; 95% CI: 19-32; p<0.001). NICE are faced with multiple challenges in trying to maximise the value realized by the taxpayers in reimbursing new pharmaceuticals, whilst not compromising or delaying patient access. However, the number and complexity of STA guidance that NICE produces is increasing significantly. NICE needs to be appropriately resourced such that it can appropriately manage this workload and continue to issue STA guidance, following an objective and comprehensive process in a timely manner." @default.
