- W2810939862 abstract "Identifying patients accurately in administrative claims data can be challenging in a rare disease like Hemophilia A (HA). Since 10/01/2015, ICD-10-CM replaced ICD-9-CM as the standard diagnosis coding system in the US. This study aimed to examine whether the ICD-10-CM code is used in patients with Hemophilia A (PwHA) that were identified from a previously validated algorithm using ICD-9-CM code. We used the MarketScan® Research Commercial Databases in the US. A recently developed algorithm by Lyons JL et al. (2017) was used to identify PwHA between 01/01/2006-09/30/2015 based on demographics, HA diagnosis (ICD-9-CM code 286.0), treatment, and resource utilization. PwHA who were continuously enrolled for ≥6 months after 10/01/2015 (conversion date) were included. We examined the proportion of patients with ≥1 HA diagnosis (ICD-10-CM code D66) since the conversion date. We also examined the proportion of patients that had ≥1 HA ICD-9-CM code and ICD-10-CM code within six months before and after the conversion date, respectively. We identified a total of 454 PwHA (100% male, mean age = 20.2 years) using the algorithm who were continuously enrolled. Among them, 401 (88.3%) had a HA ICD-10-CM code in the six months following the conversion date. We further identified 321 patients with a HA ICD-9-CM code within the six months prior to the conversion date of them, 300 (93.5%) had a HA ICD-10-CM code in the six months following the switch. The conversion of ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM can create challenges for claims data research. Based on our findings, we conclude that an ICD-10-CM code has been used in PwHA since the conversion. This provides initial evidence to support direct mapping from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM for HA diagnosis. Availability of the HA algorithm with ICD-10-CM codes broadens the application of the algorithm thus, assisting researchers in future claims-based analyses." @default.
