- W2811076268 abstract "The purpose of this chapter is to review the use of subionospheric very-low- to low-frequency (VLF–LF) signals to detect ionospheric perturbations in possible association with earthquakes. This VLF–LF method is described first, and then the results are presented based on the observations with the Far East VLF–LF network consisting of several stations in Japan and a few stations in Russia. The primary purpose is to detect pre-earthquake ionospheric perturbations, but we have to know the background of VLF–LF signals and also any disturbances induced by other agents from above and below as interferences to the seismogenic effects. Initially we have investigate the conventional solar–terrestrial effects such as geomagnetic storms and atmospheric disturbances including typhoons. Then, we move on to our main topic of pre-earthquake ionospheric perturbations. We start with clear signatures of seismogenic ionospheric perturbations for the 1995 Kobe earthquake, and followed with results for the huge 2011 Tohoku earthquake. A statistical correlation is presented between such VLF–LF perturbations and earthquakes. Finally, we comment on the mechanism of why and how the ionosphere is perturbed prior to an earthquake." @default.
