- W2811276164 abstract "The day is not far off when autonomous, artificiallyintelligent computational subjects will be employed in creativeindustries such as architecture and design. Artificial intelligenceis rapidly becoming ubiquitous, and it has absorbed manycapabilities once thought beyond its reach. As such, it is criticalthat we reflect on AI's ability to design, and on whether we areaffording our creative computational counterparts the full range oftools and freedoms utilized by designers. Design is often taskedwith pushing the envelope in the quest for novel meaning andexperience. Designers can't always rely upon existing models tojudge their work. Operating like this requires a curious and openmind, a willingness to eschew reward and occasionally break therules, and a desire to explore for the sake of exploring. Thesebehaviors fly in the face of traditional implementations ofcomputation, and raise difficult questions about the autonomy andsubjectivity of artificially intelligent machines. This thesisproposes computational play as a field of research covering how andwhy designers roam as freely as they do, what the creativepotential is of such exploration, and how such techniques mightresponsibly be implemented in computational machines. The workargues that autotelism, defined as internal motivation, is anessential aspect of play and outlines how it can be incorporated ina computational framework. The thesis also demonstrates aproof-of-concept of computational play in the form of an autonomousdrawing machine that is able to plot a drawing, view the drawing, and make decisions based on what it sees, bringing computationalvision and computational drawing together into a cyclical processthat permits the use of autotelic play behavior." @default.
