- W2811378536 abstract "Reviewed by: Earth to Dad by Krista Van Dolzer Wesley Jacques Van Dolzer, Krista Earth to Dad. Capstone, 2018 [320p] ISBN 978-1-68446-012-0 $15.95 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 4-7 In a future where a sudden shift of Earth’s orbit has made winter nonexistent, most wildlife extinct, and the sun toxic to everyone and everything, the safest place in the country is a military base in Minnesota, where only a select few get to live. Jameson, an eleven-year-old introvert, and his mom made the cut because of his astronaut father’s participation in a multi-year Martian mission to save humanity, and when Astra, the daughter of an astronaut lost in action, also moves in, the two become friends. While Van Dolzer presents a future fraught with militarized inequity and resource scarcity, the charming friendship formed between the two kids, based on a mutual longing for their missing parents, is the undeniable heart of the novel. Even when Jameson plans to stow away on a spacecraft to search for his dad, the novel is less futuristic adventure than more realistic story of childhood loss. In the end, Jameson, Astra, and their remaining earthbound parents emerge as a new and supportive family unit, while all hope isn’t quite lost for Jameson’s dad and, perhaps, humanity.
