- W281254048 abstract "The bounded state space problem appears to be one of the most difficult optimization problems from the viewpoint of generating a numerical solution. One of the major difficulties lies in the joining of the two types of segments which occur in the problem. In general, it is always possible to go from a boundary segment to an interior segment in an optimal fashion. A second difficulty lies in the corner conditions themselves. These conditions appear to contain a bare minimum of information and need careful interpretation before any computation can be done. Also, there is a certain arbitrariness in the manner in which the degrees of freedom which are lost on entering the boundary are to be restored at the exit point and this again strongly affects the computational process. Once a numerical process has been decided on, a variety of things can go wrong. An abrupt change of curvature of the boundary surface or a coupling between the admissible control and state regions may force an intermediate trajectory to “dead end,” leaving one at a loss on how to continue the iterative process." @default.
