- W282572392 abstract "This paper deals with the origin of active participles in Modern Standard Russian (MSR). It is based on the participial system of Old Church Slavonic (OCS) as described by R. Ruzicka.1 His defini? tion of the nature of participial phrases may be summarised as follows: Participial phrases have equivalents in hypotactical constructions; in the case of a participial phrase the connection remains unspecified, but they have the advantage of connecting two predicates in one sentence while maintaining a hierarchy.2 In MSR active participles can only be attributive and only occur in the long or pronominal form, but in OCS the short form can be either predicative or attributive; according to Ruzicka the long form in OCS, which can only be attributive, is marked.3 This is the form which has been taken over into Modern Russian, while the short participle in apposition became an invariable gerund and the constructions involving the short participle as the complement of a verb (headings io and 12 in Ruzicka's scheme) and in predicate function (heading 15 in Ruzicka) lapsed as a result of the decline of the short form of adjectives. The Russian form corresponding to the OCS long par? ticiple is an adjective of the type chodjacij, which is usually bound to a specific noun. In MSR the present participle active is unconnected formally with the gerund, as it has a different suffix and has declen? sional endings; the past active participle is partly connected with the gerund by their common suffix -(v)s-; syntactically they are much more distinct than the predicative and attributive participles were in OCS, since the intermediate constructions where the short participle was declinable and was a constituent of the predicate have disappeared. The only common factor is that they are verbal forms and can take an object and adverbial modifiers but cannot be qualified by an adjective, that is, their syntactic functions within their own phrase have remained the same but the function of the participial phrase is that of a constituent of a nominal phrase where? as the gerundial phrase is an immediate constituent of a sentence. Historically this development is due to the rise of hypotactic con? structions in the modern language. The immediate cause lies in the" @default.
