- W282671454 abstract "An investigation was made of the lattice dynamics of ..cap alpha..-V/sub 0.97/O/sub 0.03/, an interstitial solid solution with the oxygen atoms located at octahedral positions in the bcc vanadium lattice. The inelastic neutron scattering spectrum had singularities corresponding to the vanadium atom vibrations, as well as two impurity bands at ..omega../sub 1/=8.5x10/sup 13/ sec/sup -1/ and ..omega../sub 3/=13.7x10/sup 13/ sec/sup -1/ associated with the oxygen atom vibrations. The vibration spectrum of the vanadium matrix was hardly deformed. The frequencies ..omega../sub 1/ and ..omega../sub 3/ were used in the isolated impurity approximation to estimate the force constants of the interaction between an oxygen atom and the first- and second-nearest vanadium neighbors: ..cap alpha../sub 1/=2.21x10/sup 5/ dyn/cm and ..cap alpha../sub 2/=0.83x10/sup 5/ dyn/cm. The experimental results were compared with earlier measurements on a solid solution with a higher concentration of the interstitial atoms: V/sub 0.83/O/sub 0.17/. The frequencies ..omega../sub 1/ and ..omega../sub 3/ of V/sub 0.97/O/sub 0.03/ were shifted relative to those of V/sub 0.83/O/sub 0.17/ due to a change in the symmetry of the vanadium lattice. The natural widths ..delta omega../sub 1/ and ..delta omega../sub 3/, of the vibrations were considerable when the oxygen concentration was 3 at.% (..delta omega../sub 1/=1.5x10/supmore » 13/ and ..delta omega../sub 3/=3.8x10/sup 13/ sec/sup -1/) and they increased slightly when the oxygen concentration was 17 at.%.« less" @default.
