There is limited empirical evidence about thedeterminants of cynicism toward change, particularly inthe public sector environment. In this paper, a model isproposed which identifies three key antecedents ofcynicism toward change: change information,involvement in change, and trust in senior management.Data were collected from two public sector organizationsto identify levels and correlates of cynicism towardchange and to test the proposed model. The results ofexploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysisand structural equation modeling suggest that changeinformation, involvement in change processes, and trustin senior management influence cynicism toward change.More specifically, evidence is presented which suggeststhat involvement in change, communication aboutchange, and trust in senior management directlyinfluence cynicism toward change, and that informationabout change and involvement in change directlyinfluence trust in senior management. Collectively theantecedent variables accounted for just over fifty percentof the variance in cynicism toward change. In generalterms, the findings will prove helpful to human resourcepractitioners interested in diagnosing and managingattitudes to change in public sector organizations." @default.
