- W284879466 abstract "IT IS CLEAR THAT THE PRODUCTION OF WRITING is an excellent means of synthesizing and practicing essential skills in French. However, as currently taught, secondyear and composition courses erect too many barriers to students' perceiving and practicing language as structure. By having students apply each small increment of grammar and vocabulary immediately in fifteen-minute sessions of what we call ecriture automatique, teachers can avoid the pitfalls of overlong, abstract explanations. Also, by not assigning long compositions on idea-oriented subjects, they can encourage students to focus on language without encountering the problem of mental translation of ideas thought out in English into French. Ecriture automatique emphasizes clear, concrete explanations and immediate application of grammar and vocabulary, and the daily production of structurally sound writing. Like the Surrealists who first used the expression, our students discover that language can generate thoughts. Defined simply, our method emphasizes language structure by reinforcing grammar and vocabulary without allowing time for reflection or correction and thus eliminating mental translation, pre-composition in English, and waiting until later to get it right. In our experience over the past twelve years, teaching composition has always required a great deal of adaptation both of available textbooks and of the whole idea of composition as part of a French program to the real world. In composition courses per se we have invariably found textbooks confusing, forbidding, and simply unrealistic in their implicit assumptions about what it is possible and useful for intermediate students to do. In the more general sense, it is difficult to make good use of composition-writing as a component of any language course because writing always seems to reside in a special, anxietyridden zone where students encounter their inadequacies in permanent, visible form.1 These years of adapting, re-writing, and re-thinking have convinced us that a new approach to the issue of composition is necessary. Because there is so much grammar to be absorbed at the elementary level, composition becomes" @default.
