- W285870775 abstract "Educators and developmental psychologists have long been interested in the development of syntactic control in spoken and written language. The study of syntactic development was greatly facilitated by Kellogg W. Hunt (1965; 1970) who made two major contributions: he developed the T-unit measure (one main clause with all attached subordinate clauses) which proved a more useful, more reliable measure of syntactic complexity than those previously used (e.g., sentence length, clause length, frequency of various parts of speech and kinds of clauses); and he found that syntactic complexity as measured by the T-unit increased significantly with age. Hunt (1965) referred to the T-unit as a measure of syntactic maturity, carefully explaining that maturity (was) used to designate 'the observed characteristics of writers in an older grade' and (had) nothing to do with whether older students wrote 'better' in a stylistic sense (p. 5). Subsequent studies in widely scattered regions of the United States and Canada provided further evidence that T-unit length increases with age in written composition (Blount, Johnson and Frederick, 1968; Bortz, 1969; Braun and Klassen, 1973; Loban, 1976; O'Donnell, Griffin and Norris, 1967). Moreover, a comparison of the average number of words per T-unit for the same grades in different studies reveals considerable similarity, as is indicated in Table 1." @default.
