- W2862734600 abstract "Multidisciplinary center for diagnosis and treatment of arterial hypertension. Cardiology Clinic, Clinical center of Serbia. Medical school, University of Belgrade Background. Obesity and arterial hypertension represent important risk factors for the development of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). The aim of this study was to assess predictive value of certain anthropometric parameters on the development of LVH in patients with arterial hypertension. Methods. Altogether 156 hypertensive persons (76 men and 80 women) aged 59.13±11.26 years took part in the study. Left ventricular hypertrophy was assessed by electrocardiography and echocardiography criteria. Anthropometric parameters, blood pressure and biochemical parameters were measured in the morning. Results. LVH was assessed in 53.2 % of hypertensive patients. It was more often diagnosed among men (61.8%) than in women (45.0 %), the difference being statistically significant (p<0.05). Anthropometric parameters correlate strongly to all echocardiography parameters of left ventricle (LV), left ventricular mass and left ventricular mass index. Body mass index and systolic and diastolic blood pressure correlate significantly to all LV parameters. Total cholesterol and triglyceride levels are not significantly correlated to the investigated LV parameters. Men had higher left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVEDD), higher left atrial dimensions (La) and higher left ventricular mass (LVM). Women had higher left atrial index (Lai) due to smaller body surface area. Logistic regression analysis identified high body fat percent (Odds Ratio = 1.141) and high waist circumference (Odds Ratio = 2.251) as significant independent predictors of LVH. Female gender was the only protective predictor of LVH (Odds Ratio = 0.604). Conclusion. Obesity is a significant predictive factor for the development of left ventricular hypertrophy in persons with arterial hypertension." @default.
