- W2864732759 abstract "The dynamism, tumult, and globalization of work has spurred researchers to reconsider existing and generate new notions of careers. Scholars have recently attempted to address this need by introducing the concept of sustainable careers which is defined as “the sequence of an individual’s different career experiences, reflected through a variety of patterns of continuity over time, crossing several social spaces, and characterized by individual agency, herewith providing meaning to the individual (Van der Heijden & De Vos, 2015, p. 7). Although promising--evidenced by growing momentum in academic journals and conferences linking sustainable careers to HRM policies, aging and motivation, and employability--the concept is still early in its development. Therefore, the focus of this symposium is to further refine and extend the conceptual foundation of sustainable careers, and thereby assist in realizing its potential for research and practice. The symposium features four papers. The first two focus on the conceptualization of sustainable careers, delineating what makes careers sustainable (Paper 1) versus non-sustainable (Paper 2). The third paper explores stakeholders involved in sustainable career management (Paper 3), and the fourth explicates evidence-based principles underlying sustainable career self-management (Paper 4).The symposium is designed to synthesize these papers and engage attendees to generate a clearer conceptual foundation of sustainable careers. This in turn is intended to provide guidance for future researchers and practitioners with interests across a variety of disciplines, such as careers, HRM, OB, and aging.
