- W2868767032 abstract "As in other species, derangements in the cardiac rhythm (arrhythmias) in cats can occur with a wide range of aetiologies, including situational variation, extracardiac insults or primary structural or arrhythmic heart disease. A greater appreciation for acquired cardiomyopathy in cats has been borne of recent reports documenting a high prevalence of acquired cardiomyopathy in asymptomatic cats and the species-specific, variable utility of common markers (like murmurs or various radiographic or electrocardiographic findings) for identifying affected individuals. Hypertrophic, restrictive, unclassified, arrhythmogenic right ventricular and dilated cardiomyopathies have all been described in cats. A variety of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia and third-degree atrioventricular block, among others, have also been documented in cats both with and without structural heart disease. Recent Holter studies report that the frequency and severity of these arrhythmias are greater in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) compared to normal cats. This chapter will outline pathologic characteristics of different acquired cardiomyopathies in cats, their associations with a variety of arrhythmias, and important considerations regarding treatment, particularly as they pertain to structural disease." @default.
